3 Tips for Hot Summer Savings
Hi Money Masters!
The temperatures are rising and it’s getting HOT, HOT, HOT! But when I think about my summer finances I don’t want to feel hot under the collar. I want to feel COOOOOOOL as a cucumber! So, read on for some of my cool summer savings tips that are actually pretty hot ;).
1. AIR CONDITIONING
Let’s start by talking about the A/C. Some of you might think I’m crazy for what I’m about to say, but just hear me out. Wait for it… Don’t turn it on. It is possible to keep your home cooler by keeping shades closed on the sunny parts of your house and opening windows on all sides for cross-ventilation on those breezier days and on cooler nights. I’m just saying, using it “as needed” can save money on that electricity bill.
Your A/C unit itself can be more energy efficient by proper maintenance, including replacing filters when they get dirty. The unit has to work harder when dirty. Filters are not that expensive and usually last about 3 months. But, if it’s dirty- change it.
Even turning the temp up a little can help. For each degree you reduce your air conditioning, you could save about 3 percent on your bill.
BONUS TIP:
Since we are talking about the electric bill, take advantage of the longer evenings and keep the lights off as long as possible. Go for a walk or cuddle with family by candlelight on the porch instead of turning on the TV and other electronic devices!
2. COOKING
Something as basic as cooking may not seem like a financial drain. However, using the stove or oven indoors creates extra heat in the home. This, in return, causes the A/C to work overtime! Some possible solutions would be to plan some meals consisting of foods that do not need to be cooked. Get creative and have themes! Make deli sandwiches and head outdoors for a picnic. Also, I can’t talk about HOT summer savings without mentioning the grill! Cooking outside keeps your home cool on the inside and won’t scorch your expenses either.
3. LAWN CARE
Summer is filled with sounds that make us smile: birds singing, children laughing and playing, the splat of the water from the sprinkler. A healthy lawn is wonderful; however, most American homeowners over-water their lawns. You do not have to water every day. It is suggested to water every 5-7 days. Depending on the amount of rainfall, it can be even less frequent than that.
There are many options for saving money in the summer. By utilizing these tips, your summer can be both economical and exciting! And you will be so COOL!
Blessing to you all and a safe, happy summer!
-Helen
